About Us
Harlem Project provides free college consulting and coaching services to students from underserved communities, helping to create generational changes for our students and their families through mentorship and scholarships.Harlem Project derives its name from the Langston Hughes poem 'Harlem' in which he draws the connection and conclusion that those who feel marginalized by society eventually lose all hope. Here is the poem in its entirety:Harlem
BY LANGSTON HUGHESWhat happens to a dream deferred?Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.Or does it explode?Langston Hughes, "Harlem" from The Collected Works of Langston Hughes. Copyright © 2002 by Langston Hughes. Reprinted by permission of Harold Ober Associates, Inc.
Highlighted Student
Harlem Project's Student of the Year is Spring Valley High School’s Andrew Sutherland, who made the Principal’s List (96 average) every quarter for the 2022-23 year while excelling at varsity football and track, working a difficult job, graduating, and managing to secure acceptances to several excellent colleges. This fall he will continue on to college to pursue his dreams of becoming a pediatrician and serving his community. Stay tuned for more updates on this phenomenal young man!Drew was originally recommended to Harlem Project by his high school football coach. Entering his senior year as an average student, Drew was inspired by the opportunity to have a mentor and guide to help him navigate the college admissions process. Drawing from this inspiration, Drew excelled his entire senior year and changed his mindset from a "watcher" to a proactive student who spends his time "sharpening the saw" and preparing for his future.
